Question

Does renters insurance cover things stolen outside my home?

Short answer

Usually yes. A standard renters policy covers your belongings almost anywhere, so a laptop stolen from a café, a bike taken from a rack or things stolen from your car are covered, minus your deductible.

What is covered away from home

The personal property part of a standard renters policy follows your things, not just your apartment. Theft is a covered cause wherever it happens, including:

  • Items stolen from your car. Car insurance doesn't cover these; renters insurance does.
  • A bike stolen from a rack or a bag taken while you travel.
  • Things you keep in a storage unit, though some policies pay less for property kept somewhere you don't live.

Where it falls short

  • Your deductible comes off first, so a $300 bike with a $500 deductible pays nothing.
  • Jewelry, watches and some other valuables have a low theft limit, often around $1,500 in total, unless you list them as scheduled personal property.
  • Simply losing something isn't theft and usually isn't covered.
  • Damage to the car itself, like a broken window, is a car insurance claim under comprehensive.

Report the theft to the police and keep the report number. Insurers usually ask for it.

This is general information about how US policies usually work. Your own policy's wording and your state's rules decide the details.
