Question
Does my car insurance cover me if I use my car for work?
Short answer
Driving to and from work and the odd errand are usually covered. Deliveries, ride-hailing, carrying tools or goods, or a car owned by your business usually need extra or commercial coverage.
Usually fine on a personal policy
- Commuting to and from work.
- Occasional errands like driving to a client meeting or the bank. Tell your insurer you use the car for business; it may change the price slightly.
Usually not covered
- Deliveries and ride-hailing: personal policies usually exclude driving for pay. Ask for a rideshare or delivery endorsement, or check what the app company's insurance covers and when.
- Hauling tools, equipment or goods as a regular part of your job.
- A car titled to your business: it needs a commercial auto policy.
When employees drive their own cars for you
Their personal policy pays first. Your business can still be sued, so many businesses add hired and non-owned auto coverage (hired and non-owned auto), often to a general liability or business owner's policy.
This is general information about how US policies usually work. Your own policy's wording and your state's rules decide the details.
